Is Red Riding Hood the new worst movie of 2011 (so far)?
It seems like a week hasn’t gone by so far this year without another cinematic turkey being unleashed on the multiplexes.
This week’s four major features include Red Riding Hood, Battle: Los Angeles, Mars Needs Moms and Jane Eyre.
And while Mars Needs Moms and Battle: Los Angeles have scored impressively mediocre approval ratings – 43% and 32%, respectively – over at Rotten Tomatoes, Red Riding Hood has come in at a grand 12%. (Jane Eyre, being a literary adaptation and manna for quality-starved critics, receives a whopping 87% grade.)
This puts Red Riding Hood at about the third worst-reviewed movie of the year, putting it behind Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son (8%) and Season of the Witch (6%) but still ahead of Just Go With It (18%), Beastly (22%) and I Am Number Four (30%).
We can hardly wait to see what other cinematic treasures Hollywood’s dream factory has in store for us in the coming weeks!
Among the choicer review blurbs for Red Riding Hood:
Matt Brunson, Creative Loafing: “It’s hard to bury oneself in the picture’s moody period setting when the central thrust remains that Valerie basically has to choose between Justin Bieber and a Jonas Brother.”
Richard Roeper, RichardRoper.com: “You’ll howl alright; this is the funniest movie I’ve seen all year. Yes, it’s supposed to be a horror flick.”
In fact, the movie seems to have taken the wit out of many of the site’s “top critics”, most of whom seem barely able to muster a fresh spin on the consensus that it’s basically Twilight crossed with the Brothers Grimm (Twilight wins).
