A rogues’ gallery of Canadian musical talent joined singer/organizer Sarah McLachlan onstage at Stanley Park Saturday, Sept 15.
The occasion was a benefit for the Sarah McLachlan School of Music. Also performing with McLachlan, whose last album was 2010’s Laws of Illusion, were such heavy-hitters as Jann Arden, Bryan Adams and Stevie Nicks. According to the Vancouver Sun, Arden played an acoustic set and, with keyboardist Gary Breit, Adams trolled through FM radio hits like “Run To You” and “Summer of ’69”. Nicks however is said to have put on “a full-on rock display” that includes Led Zeppelin‘s “Rock and Roll” and tunes from the singer’s Fleetwood Mac heyday, including “Rhiannon” and “Gold Dust Woman”.
Hedley, the Canadian pop-punk band led by Jacob Hoggard, and Vancouver folk-pop act Hey Ocean! also performed.
Bill Clinton also made an appearance. According to the Globe & Mail, the former U.S. president spoke onstage “for less than four minutes.” The newspaper quoted Clinton: “I think it is very unlikely that I would have ever become president had I not been in music from the time I was nine until the time I was 17. It taught me discipline and creativity. It made me see the world in different ways. It made me understand things in different ways.”
According to the Vancouver Sun, “an estimated 11,000 people” turned out for the show.
