On Saturday night, Luciterra Dance Company presented Muse: A Contemporary Bellydance Showcase at the Rio. The Vancouver-based dance company’s show featured April Rose, a rising star on the bellydance circuit as well as many other performers from Canada and the United States.
With a Masters in Culture and Performance from UCLA’s World Arts and Cultures/Dance Department and 13 years of dancing experience behind her, April Rose doesn’t just walk the walk.
Based on the information in her bio she “creates playful and thoughtful choreographies that often seek to find a balance between fused traditions and the ethics of intercultural performance.” Mixing her moves with the music of Kreayshawn’s Gucci Gucci, April Rose’s fusion of traditional culture and pop culture was mezmerizing.
If you’re unfamiliar with Kreayshawn’s lyrics here’s a taster:Â “Why you looking bitter? I be looking better, the type of bitch that make you wish that you ain’t never met her, the editor, director plus I’m my own boss so posh, nails fierce with the gold gloss which means nobody getting over me, I got the swag and it’s pumping out my ovaries”.
Based in Austin, Texas, Rose frequently travels abroad to teach, speak, and perform at bellydance conferences. She tours internationally with The Bellydance Superstars and was a performing member of UNMATA for 5 years. She is also a certified teacher in the Hot Pot/UNMATA format of Improvisational Tribal Style.
Saturday’s lineup also included Scarlet Thistle (Portland, OR), Portico Dance Co (Bellingham, WA), Luciterra, Iron Pixie, Floreo, Maki, Soul Kaleid, Rahel, Scarlet Lux, Nicci from The Fae and Samsara Prema. The night was hosted by MC Chris Murdoch.
