Last year, Beck released a bunch of songs in sheet music form. He calls the project Song Reader and you can download the music for one of the 20 tunes, “Old Shanghai”, at songreader.net.
Some ambitious Beck fans have organized concerts to present the songs. Vancouver’s The Broken Mirrors stepped up to interpret Song Reader at the Rio Theatre Thursday night. The Broken Mirrors is a new group founded by Noah Walker, lead guitarist with CR Avery‘s band. The band also includes bassist Michael Rush, Hammond organ player Tom Heukendorff and drummer Michael Simpsonelli.
A number of guests also took part, including Mother Mother‘s Ryan Guldemond, Rococode‘s Laura Smith, members of Hey Ocean!, the Abramson Singers, Debra-Jean Creelman, and Hilary Grist, among others.
Apparently, the sold-out show was the first time the songs have been presented in Canada.
