The Vancouver International Film Festival kicked off Thursday night with a gala at the Vancouver Club following a screening of the festival’s opening movie, Nebraska.
The latest from Alexander Payne, Nebraska is about an irascible old codger played by Bruce Dern who thinks he’s struck it rich. The movie also stars Will Forte.

Payne’s previous films include Election, Sideways and The Descendants. Bruce Dern was, of course, in Silent Running.
The film festival runs until Oct 11.
