Unsung heroes of Canadian music – Herald Nix
– by Shawn Conner
A few weeks ago I was privileged to see Herald Nix play a small, intimate “house concert” – which was actually in an East Van garage that had been converted into an artist’s studio. East Vancouver singer/songwriter Rodney DeCroo, who performed alternating sets with Herald, was kind enough to invite me out.
I’d seen Herald at the Railway Club a few times, but usually he was fronting a band, and my recollection of these nights is, to say the least, hazy. So it was great to see him up close, and in an environment that encouraged active listening. I was blown away by the strength and simplicity of his songwriting, and his intense singing and guitar playing.
Herald’s been recording and performing since the mid-80s. Though he spends most of his time in Salmon Arm, B.C., at an arm’s length from the music industry, he does tour occasionally. If you get a chance, see him.
