Bands With Cats – Sarah McNair of Vancouver Cantata Singers and Little Boots

– by Cheena Jean Normandin

Your band(s) and role(s):

Vancouver Cantata Singers – 1st Alto (sometimes 2nd Soprano!). The Vancouver Cantata Singers are a super-fantastic choral ensemble from Vancouver. I joined in 2010. It was founded in 1957 and has been putting “the rad into tradition” since then. We generally perform five concerts a season.

What’s your cat’s given name? Little Boots

What’s your cat’s origin story?

We adopted Little Boots and her sister Rumble from VOKRA when they were around one year old and after they started life in a bad hoarding situation- thirty cats in one house in very poor conditions. Little Boots’s fur was very badly matted and as a result she was given the lion cut.  She was so small under all that fur. They left her feet and  legs very fluffy so it looked like she had Uggs on, so we named her Little Boots.

What does your cat eat?

She likes posh cat food, Greens Dental Bites (tuna flavour), buttered toast and melon ice-cream (we discourage the last two but that doesn’t stop her trying – see below).

What do you think your cat’s theme song is?

The Pink Panther Theme. She likes to think she is that cool but gets everyone particularly herself and Rumble into trouble.

What is the last book your cat fell asleep on?

She likes to flop anywhere soft so books are less her thing. She did help me with my music once.

If your cat sees a GIANT spider, what is it’s course of action?

Look at it, play with it, really look at it, play with it (repeat several times), then… pounce.

Where is the last incredible feat that your feline accomplished?

Becoming a ninja cat and turning her fur black. Poor disguise kitty. (see picture)

What does your cat listen to while it is basking on a window sill in the sun?

Liszt, Liebestraum No.3 A-flat. Piano music is her thing. 😉

If you and your cat woke up in a weird Freaky Friday situation, what do you think would be the first thing your cat would do?

Have a large bowl of melon ice-cream.

The Vancouver Cantata Singers’ last concert of the season, Voices of Vancouver: Choral Music by Vancouver Composers, is on Saturday May 3, 8 p.m. in Vancouver’s Orpheum Annex. Visit VancouvernCantataSingers.com for more info.
