Ladyhawke is Pip Brown, for starters
And Ladyhawk is four guys. So there’s that. Ladyhawk is from Vancouver, and Brown hails from New Zealand.
Both have shows in Vancouver coming up.
On Sat. Aug 25, Ladyhawk (Vancouver) plays the Waldorf with Black Mountain. Ladyhawke (New Zealand) plays the Fortune Sound Club Sept 20 as part of the Olio Festival (Sept 19 – 23).
Brown’s past includes bands such as Two-Lane Blacktop (named after the awesome 1971 Monte Hellman road movie; she must have a thing for ’70s flicks, because the music video for her song “Black White & Blue”, below, is based on the 1978 Faye Dunaway movie Eyes of Laura Mars). She was also in Sydney-based Teenager before setting off on her own.
Her second album, Anxiety, was released earlier this year (the new Ladyhawk album, No Can Do, will be out Oct 9).
Brown addressed the not-much-of-an-issue with Exclaim!‘s Cam Lindsay, who asked if the similar names had “become confusing or problematic” for her.
“Not for me,” Brown said, “but I have met people who have bought tickets to one of their shows thinking it was me. I called myself Ladyhawke about four years ago and didn’t realize there was another band called that. But ages and ages ago I got in contact with them and we just sorted it out. The music’s so different too. They seem like really cool guys.”
To add to the confusion, there is also a 1985 movie called Ladyhawke with Michelle Pfeiffer, Rutger Hauer and Matthew Broderick. According to Wiki, the movie inspired Brown’s choice of name.
So in summation:
Ladyhawke (New Zealand, looks like):
Ladyhawk (Vancouver, looks like):
And then there’s this:
Musically, we should mention, Ladyhawke sounds like, at her best, this song, the delicious “Black White & Blue”.
